Automobile Accident Frequencies

We are constantly asked why it costs so much to insure young drivers. The following table, from the Insurance Insitute for Highway Safety, shows the loss exposure potential for different age groups.

Age..........................Crashes per 1000 Licensed Drivers
16..............................................................190.3
17..............................................................163.2
18..............................................................142.9
19..............................................................127.8
20-24............................................................91.4
30-34............................................................54.7
40-44............................................................43.9
50-54............................................................36.4
60-64............................................................31.3
70+...............................................................32.1

Driving is a process of developing judgement and motor skills. Unfortunately, it is a "learn by doing" process. The figures attest to this in that, as the drivers get older and gain more experience, the accident frequency goes down. The accident frequency doesn't begin to increase again until over age 70.
